Chryso, a global leader in sustainable construction solutions and part of Saint-Gobain Construction Chemicals, announced the launch of EnviroAdd™, a new portfolio of customized cement activators for North American customers. These advanced additives optimize the performance of blended cements, including Type IL Portland Limestone Cement, accelerating the shift toward low-carbon concrete.
Chryso’s latest innovation builds on years of research and expertise in chemical cement activators, aiming to enhance low-carbon cements without compromising concrete quality or performance. This aligns with the 2050 Cement and Concrete Industry Roadmap for Net Zero Concrete established by the Global Cement & Concrete Association. The roadmap emphasizes the critical role of chemical additives as enablers of various decarbonization initiatives. Set to debut at World of Concrete 2025 at Booth #S-11326, attendees will get a firsthand look at Chryso’s EnviroAdd, designed to support these industry-wide efforts.
“With the introduction of our groundbreaking EnviroAdd portfolio, we’re empowering the cement industry to overcome key challenges and accelerate the adoption of low-carbon concrete,” says Chryso Cement Additive Sales Director David Colby. “Extensive testing across North America has delivered outstanding results, showcasing how EnviroAdd can significantly reduce carbon dioxide while improving performance.”
Addressing Type IL Cement Challenges in North America
As Type IL cement naturally produces less carbon, the use of it has become widespread in North America. However, conversion to higher limestone contents often presents challenges, such as reduced compressive strength, plastic shrinkage, variable set time and other performance issues.
“It’s critical to approach Type IL cement with a careful examination to understand and mitigate potential side effects during a project,” Colby says. “At Chryso we’ve developed the EnviroAdd portfolio specifically to tackle these challenges. We are laser-focused on supporting the industry’s transition to Type IL cement.”
Field-tested across numerous North American projects, EnviroAdd activators have demonstrated remarkable strength gains, while controlling water demand and cement packset. With Type IL cement specifically, strength improvements can reach up to 20 to 25% at one day and 15 to 20% at 28 days. This creates room for process and quality optimization and further clinker reduction, including with other supplementary cementitious materials like fly ash, natural pozzolan, as well as calcined clay.
